Elephantine Island, Sehel Island and Tombs of the Nobles Tour
A private Aswan tour of Elephantine Island, Sehel Island and the Tombs of the Nobles with an Egyptologist guide.
A private Aswan tour of the High Dam, Philae Temple and the Unfinished Obelisk with an Egyptologist guide and hotel pickup.
This Philae Temple, High Dam and Unfinished Obelisk tour is the classic first day in Aswan: three landmarks in one private, guided route. With an Egyptologist guide you see the Aswan High Dam that tamed the Nile, cross by motorboat to the island Temple of Isis at Philae, and finish in the ancient granite quarry where the Unfinished Obelisk still lies in the rock. Nothing is rushed: hotel pickup, entrance fees and the guide are included, and the three stops sit close together, so the route works well as a first day in the city or as a single day on a short stay.
Quick facts
Your Egyptologist guide and driver collect you from your hotel in Aswan and take you first to the Aswan High Dam, just south of the city. Your guide explains why it was built: to protect Egypt from the Nile's unpredictable floods, to generate hydroelectric power and to store water in Lake Nasser. From the dam you look out over the lake on one side and the river on the other, and you hear how the project changed farming, energy and the lives of the Nubian communities who lived along the valley.
From the dock near the dam you take a short motorboat ride to Agilkia Island, home to the Temple of Isis at Philae, often called the Pearl of Egypt. You walk through the entrance pylon and the colonnaded courts of a sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Isis, built and expanded under the Ptolemies and the Romans. Your guide explains how the complex was rescued from the rising waters of the High Dam and rebuilt on this higher island, and you have time to enjoy the setting.
You finish at the ancient granite quarries of Aswan, where the Unfinished Obelisk still lies half-cut in the rock. A crack appeared in the stone, and the ancient masons abandoned it. Had it been completed, it would have been the largest obelisk ever raised. Your guide shows you the tool marks and explains how workers cut and shaped granite with simple tools. After your visit you are driven back to your hotel in Aswan, where the tour ends.
Who this tour suits
First-time visitors who want Aswan's three best-known sights in one day, families, and travellers on a tight schedule.
Local planning note
The three stops are close together, which keeps driving short and leaves time for the temple itself. Philae is reached by a short boat ride, so wear shoes with a good grip for the dock and bring sun protection for the open granite quarry.

This Aswan tour covers the Aswan High Dam, Philae Temple on Agilkia Island and the Unfinished Obelisk, with an Egyptologist guide, entrance fees and hotel pickup and drop-off included.
Philae Temple stands on Agilkia Island. On this tour you cross to the island from the dock by a short motorboat ride, after visiting the High Dam.
Philae Temple was rebuilt on Agilkia Island because the original island was flooded after the Aswan High Dam was built. The temple, dedicated to Isis, was taken apart and reassembled on higher ground.
The Unfinished Obelisk in Aswan was abandoned because a crack appeared in the granite while it was still being cut. It remains in the quarry, which shows how ancient stoneworkers shaped the rock.
Yes. The High Dam, Philae Temple and the Unfinished Obelisk are close together, so a private tour can cover all three in one day, with hotel pickup and drop-off.
